Saguaro National Park

As we were once again staying at Justin and Heather’s house in the western foothills of Tucson, we were practically in the backyard of Saguaro National Park. Cami and Andi got their junior ranger badges there and were able to attend a 1 day camp with Chandler, Colin and Brooklyn (the Rosson kids) Although the camp itself was less than impressive, there were some great views, some petro glyphs and the amazing skull of a Gila Monster. I always thought the bumps were part of the skin on a Gila Monster, but now I know that their bumpy heads are from the bone. Cool.

By far, the neatest thing we did at Saguaro was the moonlight hike. One evening we left before sunset with a couple of ranger volunteers. We hiked through a wash and up a hill as the sun was setting on a crystal clear day. The moon was nearly full and after the sunset, we waited at the top until we could see our moon shadows, then hiked back. It seemed everyone but the 3 of us was in a hurry to get home that evening. We ended up walking back to the truck with the 2 rangers talking about the constellations that were visible that evening and looking for scorpions with a black light. Too cool!
